The Jury's citation: “Mr. Ferdinand Meder has instituted the profession of conservation and elevated educational standards in his country. He sets a fine example for public service in conservation”. “Mr. Meder has gone beyond the call of duty. Throughout the different eras of his country, he has adapted and has always worked in the interest of cultural heritage. Even in periods of conflict, he has exercised his unflinching dedication to the defence of heritage and has raised awareness in the international heritage sphere”.

Mr. Ferdinand Meder has, during 45 years of his vigorous engagement with principal cultural heritage institutions, made key contributions to their development, as well as to the protection of the most prominent monuments in Croatia. As an art historian, and having spent more than 33 years as top cultural manager, he was directly involved in a number of world-class monuments and projects, for example in Dubrovnik, Osijek and Split, and the "Research, Restoration and Revitalization of the Cultural Heritage llok-Vukovar-Vucedol", and "Apoxyomenos" projects. His experience further converged through advocating the formation of graduate conservation studies, fomation of the UNESCO International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, and development of the national professional licencing system. Mr. Meder's dedicated service became a high standard in the heritage protection sector, while his legacy of cooperation throughout Europe and sophisticated conservation projects make an invaluable contribution to the preservation of Europe's past and future.
