Description:
The famous Sofievka Park was founded in 1796 by the polish count Stanislaw Potocki (1751-1805) for his wife Sofia (1769-1822). The park's chief architect was Ludwik Metzel (1764-1848), a Polish military engineer who imported many rare plants from all around Europe. It is one of the world famous garden-park art creations. There are many scenic areas in the park including waterfalls, fountains, ponds and a stone garden. The Sofievka is one of the most famous examples of late 18th and early 19th century European landscape garden design. In March 1980 the snow melted that quickly, that the bank of the first pond was washed away and over 5 million cubic meters of water crashed down the park, damaging most of the constructions and plants. Between 1980 and 1994 the restoration has been carried out.
