Description:
This study has been carried out within the framework signed between the Istanbul Technical University and the UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The object of the study is Three historic districts of the Istanbul peninsula where the original settlement pattern has been preserved: Zeyek, Suleymaniye and Yenikapi. Although these areas have been inscribed on the World eritage List, lack of consevation efforts threatens their authenticity and integrity. This study provides a comprehensive document for the for an integrated conservation strategy that maintains the appropriate and contemporary development of the social and physical/environmental fabric of these areas, whilst preserving their historical, archaeological, natural and architectural values. The study contains four volumes. The first volume presents a summary of the conservation approach to cultural assests in Turkey. The other three volumes contain the detailed physical and social survey, the evaluation and planning decisions and the implementation framework for each of the case studies.
