Description:
Röthelstein Castle was built 1655 for two reasons: firstly, at times of threatened invasion by the Turks, the castle could serve as defense and refuge for the population - the site of the castle with its dominant position support this, defense towers and firing slits can still be seen today. Secondly the building of the nearby summer seat was constructed for the order. Since WWII the castle became more and more dilapidated. The decision of the Youth Hostel Association to take over the building prompted restoration and transformation to a youth hostel. The top floor of the castle has been converted into a dormitory wing, the large open courtyard has been roofed and converted to a refectory. An additional construction was necessary to accommodate workshops, sauna and garage.
