Description:
A great many theatres were built in Spain during the nineteenth century, and during the present century many of them fell in to disrepair, often being partly re-used as cinemas. The present program was intended to detain this process of decay, and to respond to growing public demand for live theatre and other spectacles, not only in large cities but also in smaller provincial towns. The program includes 61 theatres in public ownership, in addition to several others. Most of the specific projects have now been completed, and the theatres are in use. In certain cases (indicated in the attached lists), work is still underway or the project is in the planning stage. The program has been carried out by what is now the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment, in ollaboration with the regional governments and local authorities, and the Ministry of Culture. The whole program was presented for the EUROPA NOSTRA PRIZE COMPETITION 1994, as this was the Year of the Theatre in Europe.
