Description:
Located in the centre of Antwerp, UFSIA (University of Antwerp) has restored two patrician's mansions known as 'Den Grooten Sot' and 'Het Brantijser', situated at Sint-Jacobsmark:t 11 and 13, in order to accommodate its adult education and lifelong leaming programmes. Due to the great diversity and complexity of these premises and their rich history, this restoration project was an extremely varied assignment. Time and again, one had to consider how historical reality could be preserved and reappraised despite the weather-beaten state of the buildings. The premises were given a new purpose, while they also had to meet certain standards regarding comfort and safety. New elemenrs, with a recognisable conremporary design, harmonise with the original setting.
