Description:
The oldest parts of the Château de Margon are dating back to the 13th century. They were built on the ruins of an ancient castle, which was destroyed in the times of the Albigensian war. It was restored and transformed into a summer residence. In the beginning of the 18th century it was brought up to date with "fenêtres à l'italienne", mural paintings and the construction of a monumental staircase connecting the terraces. During the Revolution the towers were beheaded, the wrought iron gates removed and the statues damaged. Because of the lack of maintenance a wing and a part of the exterior stairs collapsed at the beginning of this century. Major repairs were begun, but the war of 1914 stopped all work. They were resumed in 1981. First the degradation of a long remained uninhabited house was stopped, by repairing the roofs doors and windows and the restoration of the park. Almost half of the 40 rooms were restored. The gate has been rebuilt. The garden is the subject of constant maintenance. The terrace has been renovated.
