Description:
The complete restoration was undertaken because of deterioration of the natural stone construction by air pollution, rusting of iron anchoring, a defective roof followed by moisture damage, fire hazard by the electrical installation. Stone was replaced, redressed or chemically hardened. The attempt was made to retain as much of the remaining original stone as possible. Iron anchoring was replaced by bronze. Restoration of the roof: Apart from some necessary interventions with steel and reinforced concrete, the work to the smaller elements of the woodwork could be limited to replacement by recycled and new wooden elements. Complete renewal of electrical installation. Restoration of the interior: All finishing layers applied were stripped from the structural architectural elements in lime-sand stone. Brick core of the pillars was injected with epoxy resin. Installation of an air-conditioning system. The interior was re-whitewashed, a few valuable and well-preserved paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries were uncovered and restored. Repair of stonework and leaded glass of the windows.
