Description:
Highgate Cemetery is generally recognised to be one of England's finest 19th century's cemeteries and is thus of primary cultural, architectural and landscape significance. It is listed Grade lI in the English Heritage 'Register of Parks and Gardens' denoting a site of outstanding cultural and Iandscape importance. The Cemetery contains a total of 37 listed memorials, mausoleums and structures. The most famous burial is that of Karl Marx. The Friends of Highgate Cemetery, a charitable body, was set up in 1981 for the essential purpose of saving the site from redevelopment but have gone on since then to arrest the process of decay and to restore and secure the landscape and architecture. The Circle of Lebanon is chosen as the project to best illustrate the approach to conservation which has been developed for this unique inheritance.
