The restoration of the historic core and heart of Newcastle upon Tyne to counter urban decay and economic and social decline. The regeneration of the urban environment followed a strategy of grant-aided refurbishments of listed buildings, upgrading of housing in the area, repairing the Grey's Monument and a co-ordinated approach to street surfaces, lighting and furniture.
