Description:
Rehabilitation of one of the most outstanding artillery fortifications in Europe built 1747-1769. It is held in trust by the Secretary of State for Scotland, and is also a working army barracks for infantry battalion. The work involved 26 buildings and activity areas. Activities requiring larger volumes were sited outside the fort in a new complex a kilometer distant. Re-movement of inappropriate additions. There was an unusually large structural content in the rehabilitation work involving extensive remodeling of internal masonry structures, waterproofing, strengthening of hundreds of timber floor beams, etc. The result is an accommodation of high standard for the Army, well up to that of new barracks, while the future of the fort itself is secured.
