Description:
The Newport Transport Bridge crosses the River Usk in Newport. Designed by the engineers R.H. Haynes and Ferdinand Arnodin it was opened in 1906 and continued in operation until 1985, when it was closed due to concerns regarding its condition and safety. A three-year major refurbishment of the bridge was undertaken with work commencing in 1992. The stairways were partially rebuilt with new handrails and stair treads throughout. The opportunity was also taken to erect a permanent access platform around the saddles at tower-top level. The towers were also repaired, blast cleaned and painted. All the main anchor and suspension cables were replaced and the cable anchorages were refurbished. All damaged and broken cable hangers, pins and U-bolts were replaced. Structural steelwork repairs were made. The main boom, the gondola and the motor house were refurbished.
