Description:
TIn 1850 Titus Salt decided to construct a mill three miles north of Bradford. Saltaire Mill opened in 1853. Saltaire is one of the most complete model villages. Its construction began in 1853 and continued until 1876. The village was planned on a strictly grid pattern. When completed it was a comprehensive economic and social unit offering all that a Victorian employer could regard as necessary for a useful life - work, health, education, moral instruction, provision for respectable leisure activities and good houses. In February 1986 Salts Mill became redundant. Shops became empty, house prices were very low and buildings were empty and neglected. The regeneration of Salts Mill prompted its redevelopment. It is owned by the New Mill Development Company who converted it into 143 private residential flats and Bradford Health Trusts new headquarters. The revived interest and activity at the mills attracted many visitors. The empty shops along Victoria Road and Garden Terrace have become occupied. In 1989 the Saltaire Town Scheme was introduced to redress the loss of traditional characteristics to the buildings in Saltaire. Original Detailed sliding sash windows and wooden doors were reinstated to around 300 village properties. Architectural stonework was restored.
