Description:
The Merchant City represents the extent of pre-industrial Glasgow and lies at the heart of the city centre. In 1980, Glasgow District Council initiated a housing led programme to promote the economic regeneration and physical restoration of this historic area. The Merchant City is wholly protected by Conservation Area Status, the majority of all buildings have been stonecleaned or repainting, Blackfriars Street has been pedestrianised, and most vacant sites have been landscaped.
