Description:
The 58 French Street is one of the earliest complete Merchant's houses in England. It consists of a vaulted cellar, above which were the shop, central hall, open to the roof, and private inner chamber. Above this were 2 bed chambers linked by a gallery across the hall. The property has been returned substantially to its mid 14th century appearance by the removal of post medieval features using traditional methods and materials. The house has been furnished as it may have been in the Middle Ages with hand-made furniture and specially woven hangings. As far as possible, repair or reconstruction (roof, windows, fire place, and floors) has been carried out by traditional methods.
