Description:
The Wicken Fen nature reserve (245 ha) is all that remains of significance of the "Great Levels of East Anglia", representing less than 0.5% of this once vast area of fenland. The ecology of this internationally important site was threatened by drying out. The problem has been tackled by sea!ing the surrounding banks and by the introduction of more sophisticated controls over water Ievels. At the same time the Fen has been made more accessible for visitors, particularly children and the disabled who now have a greater insight into its social and economic hitstory through the restoration of the Fenman's Cottage.
