Description:
Shire Hall was designed by James Adam, the younger brother of the renowned Robert Adam and built between 1769-1771. It was designed as a Courthause and incorporated a suite of Civic rooms on the first floor. In the subsequent 200 years the dignity and quality of the old building was greatly harmed by two sets of alterations in the early and late 19th Century and by ill considered additions and neglect in the 20th Century. Design work commenced in 1986 and restoration work on site in 1987. Major structural repair, restoration and remodelling to the exterior and interior was carried out.
