Description:
The Almodí (Almudín in its Castilian form) of Valencia was a grain store built within the Muslim Alcázar (fortified palace) after the Christian reconquest. It corresponds mainly to the Gothic period, with successive additions from its original formation around an open courtyard until it became an overall roof at the end of the 16th century. The outer walls are fortified, to protect the stored grain against possible attacks in times of need. During the restoration, an original doorway was found, that is a significant example of the late Valencian Gothic. It leads to the Plaza de San Luis Beltrán and was reopened. The battlements, which had been roughly bricked up, were uncovered. Careful studies were made on the historic construction techniques. The original floor level, which had been raised in the 16th century, was restored. Popular wall paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries were preserved in moderate condition on the upper walls of the arcades of the central section. They have been restored by specialists.
