Description:
Castle Waldegg was built between 1682 and 1690 as a summer residence for Johann Viktor I von Besenval and his wife Maria-Margaritha von Sury. Between 1722 and 1736 interior and exterior alterations of the castle were made by their son Victor II. It is the largest and most beautiful of Solothurn's many country seats, with two tree-lined walks leading up to the baroque manor and gardens. The restoration and reconstruction works of the castle were carried out between 1985 and 1991. An outstanding piece of baroque architecture from the late 17th and the first half of the 18th century was opened to the public. The reconstruction of the southern tree-lined walk with hundreds of trees and the restoration and reconstruction of the baroque garden has given back the baroque character to the entire surrounding of the castle.
