Description:
At the time of its creation (1929-32) it was together with the "Haus Berolina" the most noticeable feature in the redevelopment of the "Alexanderplatz", the eastern centre of the prewar "Reichshauptstadt" Berlin (capital of the Weimarer Republic). Their existence is the result of a competition from 1929. Its aim was to resolve the architectural aspects of the overall scheme, which also incorporated the reorganization of streets, open spaces and public transportation for the Alexanderplatz. The Landesbank, who owns the buildings since 1991, has made a point of returning this building in its original state. Following a three year building period since 1992 and extensive restoration and reconstruction the building has now resurrected in its original form and detail. After the discovery of some original drawings, as well as the continuous assistance of the chief historian of the board for national monuments, it was possible to trace materials and design ideas and reapply them in their original context.
