Description:
The monumental Baroque ensemble "Chateau St. Gerlach" owes its name and existence to the hermit St. Gerlachus who died in 1165 and is still revered in Houthem-St. Gerlach. It grew to became a famous convent for the nobility and even Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, stayed there. For a long time the estate was a Spanish/Austrian enclave on Dutch territory. From 1800 to 1979 the complex was the home of aristocratic families. It then fell into disrepair. It was the most important restauration project in the Netherlands of the last decade of the 20th century.
