Description:
The restoration of the Koppelpoort, dating from the early 15th century, was necessary because of major structural problems at many parts of the building. Ecological aspects played an important role in the restoration-approach: the rare and protected wall-flora at the gate was saved. This went hand in hand with the basic principle of preserving the picturesque character and the 'patina' of this mediaeval defence structure. Only where strictly necessary, reparations and reconstructions have been made, preserving as much as possible of the original building material. That's the reason why, although a Iot of work has been carried out, the pictures 'before' and 'after' show a close resemblance.
