Description:
The town of Klundert is situated in the western part of the province Noord-Brabant. It was built in 1558 by the Prince of Orange on the place where in 1421 the old town Niervaart got lost because of the enormous St.Elisabeth-flaod. When the Eighty Years War started the city had a fortress built, which was partly demolished in the 18th century when it became obsolete. During WWII Klundert was seriously damaged and then again in 1953 by a big flood. The Town Hall and the Crownwork "De Suikerberg" could be restored before long but, due to a lack of means, it wasn't before 1974 that the restoration of the fortress could start. In the next six years the northern ramparts with the moat, the envelope round the crownwork, the sluice at the Verlaatsheul and the "beer" (batardeau or dam) with the two "monniken" (turrets) were completed.
