Description:
The Ciernohronská forest railway (CHŽ) is one of the last existing forest railways in Slovakia. It was a typical means of forest transport in Slovakia in the beginning of the first half of the 20th century. The construction began in 1908. The main track from Hronec to Cierny Balog was 104 kilometers long and was finished 1909, the same year the track was put into operation. Gradually it reached 131,98 kilometers of total length and was the longest forest railway in Slovakia. 12 kilometers of the Ciernohronská forest railway have been reconstructed. Several station buildings have been repaired and a number of historical steam engines and wagons have been collected and repaired. The largest part of the reconstruction work was done by volunteers within Strom života.
