Description:
The wooden chapel in Turdosin, situated on a hill not far from the historic centre of the city, was built in the 15th century. It is a masterpiece by skilled carpenters who had built quite a lot of similar Gothic churches. Many changes have occurred over its years of existence. In the 17th century a new entrance had been made and windows were added or enlarged. A pulpit was constructed in 1654 and afterwards the baroque altar was built. In 1899 and 1927 the building had major repairs. From 1986 - 1993 the chapel was completely restored to preserve the original wooden construction. At the initiative of the city a program of restoration was undertaken. The shell of the church was lifted and every damaged part was replaced, one after another. The roof was reconstructed and the entire building was coated to prevent future decay. The restoration included also the interior. In the churchyard a new cemetery chapel has been built, which fits well with the surroundings.
