Description:
The project’s origin lay in the need to carry out conservation work in order to prevent degradation to the façade, to repair damage already detected, and to restore it to its former splendour. The last large-scale restoration of the façade, a National Monument since 1914, was undertaken between 1914 and 1929. In addition to the restoration work, it was decided to showcase its historic material elements as identified in the study of its numerous constituent features and as they emerged in the course of the restoration, and its significance, while respecting previous restoration work which, without damaging the façade or spoiling its design, was in a good state. The execution of the project and the restoration included work intended to: recover the visual impact of the monument’s design, make the monument part of the town’s life, view and understand it “as the artisans who first built it” had done, and extend and publicize knowledge of the monument. The project was financed through the Ministry of Public Works and the University of Alcalá and was completed in 2017.
