The Jury's citation: “The project impressed the jury with the international scale of research devoted to the “Boulle Technique” of furniture decoration. The technique is of European significance, practiced in French, German and Austrian workshops to create ornate furniture of the highest reputation. Through the restoration of four writing tables made in Munich in around 1710, the highly complicated original manufacturing process has been reconstructed. Moreover, new conservation techniques have been developed and applied by an interdisciplinary European group of experts, implementing analyses of materials. The compilation of a data-based archive provides results which will further enhance the conservation of an outstanding technique of furniture-making that is part of Europe’s intangible cultural heritage.”

Description:
The project „New approaches to the conservation of furniture in Boulle-technique“, carried out at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum München from Oct. 2007 to Sept. 2010 focussed on the advancement of conservation practices in the treatment of art objects veneered in the so-called Boulle-technique with turtleshell, horn and different metals. These highly sensitive objects have been produced and cherished all over Europe for more than 300 years, but until today we have still less information on techniques, materials, conservation methods and their art historical context. On four magnificent writing tables made in Munich around 1710 detailed scientific examination was carried out and revealed new information on manufacturing techniques. An interdisciplinary group of experts from Austria, France, Great Britain and Germany was formed in order to discuss these results and develop new conservation techniques in order to avoid typical conservation damages frequently occurring in the past. Thus a number of novel methods were applied successfully. A data-based archive on experiences of European conservators in the work with Boulle-marquetry was compiled to enhance exchange of knowledge. In addition the furniture scientists within the expert group got continuative findings. In spring 2011 the results will be shown in an exhibition and an international symposium.
