Suvanto in Pelkosenniemi is the best preserved 18th century village area in Lapland. Since 1985 old buildings have been renovated with financial support from the Ministry of Environment. The renovationprogramme was carried out by the owners of the houses with help of a local building contractor. The work is done mainly by traditional materials and construction methods based on an inventory, documentation and conservation plan. The renovation program has helped to preserve the village and start new activities.
