Description:
The objective of the project was to restore the 'Old British Cemetery', (1806- 1857), to save what was left of its fine neo-classic monuments and to render its garden again suitable for public enjoyment. The Cemetery bad become totally derelict, having suffered neglect, war damage, vandalism and erosion. In 1988 Din L-Art Helwa, co-sponsored by the Britisb High Commission and the Maltese Government, began the process of restoration. This involved research, rebuilding of many tombs, cataloguing of memorial tablets, and general landscaping. The project took 12 years, cost LM 15,000, and was carried out by volunteers from Din L-Art Helwa.
