Description:
Tyholmen, once a neglected part of Arendal, has been converted into an area of restored old wooden buildings giving new life to commercial and cultural activities. This pioneer project for the heritage preservation of town areas in Norway, shows that restoration and reuse of old buildings can be made at lower costs than demolition and rebuilding, futhermore, shows the importance of built heritage to strengthen the identity of a town centre. Klockers Hus - the very preservation center for Tyholmen, was established by the aid of local as weil as national forces. Today it is a conference and events venue, housing a library and the town museum, acting as an umbrella organisation for various cultural activities , especially in the field of preservation.
