Description:
The church was planned during the 1650s by the architect Jean de la Vallé with a Greek cross plan. Its center was covered with a huge brick dome surrounded by four cross-arms. The construction took almost four decades and was finished in 1695. In 1723 the church was ravaged by fire. Only the masonry was left. The octagonal tower with the wooden dome was built during the 1730s according to the plans made by Göran Josua Adelcrantz. The church was again ravaged by fire on the 17th of May 1990. The rebuilding of Katarina church after the fire of 1990 is a unique restoration project in Sweden. The outer design and the ruined brick dome have been reconstructed using building techniques of the 17th and 18th centuries. The interior contains reconstructions of the altarpiece and organ façade. Other furnishing are newly designed.
