Description:
An interesting historic area, which suffered industrial decline when the lace industry fell into decline after the First World War. Designated in 1969 as one of the City's first Conservation Areas. Three of the larger derelict sites have been developed as new housing, partly by the City Council, partly by Housing Association. Creating of new car parks and a new park. Grant aid was given to private owners. Facelift of the shopping streets traversing the area. Now a lively mixed-use area, having successfully managed to convince owners that it was worth restoring the very run-down buildings.
