Description:
This watermill is situated on the Estate grounds, fed from a large mill pond of great scenic value and with a topographical catchment of only 0.5 km2. Yet this is perhaps the best sited watermill in the country: the pond is fed exclusively from ochre-containing springs (rød-kilde = red springs). When the miller draws his gate, the mill will turn its 6m Ø wheel, the water level in the pond will fall, and more water will rush in from the springs. This 8° "warm" water never dries out in summer, and never freezes in winter - a true "Særrimmer-mill" (Særrimmer was a mythological pig they kept in Valhalla: when you cut out a lump of pork off him, it grew out again immediately). The Mill was always attached to a large Estate, Rødkilde, and their grinding kept the Mill alive until preservation could become effective. The 30 m long grain warehouse collapsed in 1970, and was duly restored in 1972, under the auspices of the Molinological Laboratory. In 1993/94 the mill building itself was thoroughly renovated and put back in use.
