Description:
Sophienberg was designed in 1742-44 by Denmark's foremost Architect at the time, Nicolai Eigtved, for Queen Sophie Magdalene as a summer residence at The Sound North of Copenhagen. Little documentation has survived and the house was hardly ever used by the Queen, because of the death of the King in 1745. Various owner s misused the house and part of it was sold as building materials in 1830 including the pompous terrassed gardens towards the sea. In 1986 the house was acquired by Niels Thygesen & Co . A/S, who undertook the restoration and rehabilitation, including the addition of 2 new pavillions, and restoration of the park.
