New Lanark is the cotton-spinning village found in 1785, which Robert Owen's utopian experiments made world famous. Demolition threatened in the 1970s. Preservation has saved the village and especially the buildings surrounding the "Village Square": -County House, dating from 1812, restoration of Owen's office and adaptation for a visitor information point -Village Store, dating from 1813, one of the first co-operative enterprises, restored for the use as rented houses and shop -Nursery Buildings, dating from 1809, constructed to house pauper children, houses now a sound recording studio and rented houses -New Buildings, from 1798, workers housing, now office building and rented houses -Village Square, restoration of the square, removal of mill offices and restoration of original mill entrance, restoration of cast iron railings and stone walls to original pattern.
