Description:
The House of Hadjigeorgakis is an 18th century building of architectural and historical significance. It was declared an "Ancient Monument" in 1935 and has been restored by the Department of Antiquities in order to preserve its original character. Restoration work of the building made possible the study of it architectural development. Only recent additions have been removed, like separation walls built in the 19th century or blocked openings. Wall-painting have also been restored. Interior and exterior restoration work began in 1981, the house was in 1987 opened as a museum. The aims of the project was: - presentation of the best example of traditional domestic architecture surviving from the Ottoman period in Nicosia - reconstitution of the life-style of this period The museum is also used as cultural centre and contribute to the revitalization of the historic city.
